Manipulating the breath also becomes a powerful means to enhance mood, elevate energy levels, and foster a sense of equilibrium and centering.
While breathing is an innate function, the quality of our breath evolves from childhood to adulthood, with children naturally engaging in deeper breaths. The shift towards shorter and shallower breathing as we age can negatively impact us physically and mentally. This underscores the importance of cultivating conscious breathing habits.
Distinguishing between Breathwork and Pranayama, the latter is a yogic discipline centered around breath control. Prana, denoting vital energy or breath, combined with Yama, meaning control, signifies the deliberate regulation of breath. Pranayama encompasses various techniques to expand, extend, and master the breath. On the other hand, Breathwork is a broader term encompassing all forms of conscious and connected breath practices. While all Pranayama can be considered Breathwork, the reverse isn't necessarily true.
In my practice, I view Breathwork as an initial and potent step, serving as a foundational tool to facilitate embodiment and self-connection. It empowers individuals to experience a profound sense of presence.
With its more intricate techniques, Pranayama introduces a spiritual dimension to the practice. Both modalities lead to extraordinary effects, calming the mind and ushering in peace and stillness.
